Volvo Racing Sim With ABS Standard

If you’ve ever wanted to flog a Volvo S60 concept or a classic 850 wagon around a track - and who hasn’t? - thank SimBin Studios for Volvo: The Game. This little gem’s existence proves that while some folks scour the Internet looking for Gran Turismo 5 cheats, at least some of us just want to hoon around a Ukranian track in a Volvo 240.
The sim allows Robert Dahlgren wannabes to choose from one of six cars and three skill levels. Since we’re talking Volvos here, ABS is standard equipment for n00bs. While the game is freeware, there’s no guarantee that in a few months it won’t charge you a couple hundred bucks for a new timing belt.
SimBin went to a lot of trouble to make the game as realistic as possible, going so far as to duplicate the interiors of cars in the Volvo Museum and doing a few laps in retired racers to record the sound of the last-gen S40’s engine. The gameplay is convincing enough that Dahlgren, who drives in the Swedish Touring Car Championship, uses it when he isn’t making real-life runs in his hot C30.
“Playing racing games helps me train my ability to concentrate and to maintain my level of concentration over many laps,” he said.
The C30 is represented, as is the S60 concept and an Touring Car Championship S60. If you want something a little older, you can try an S40 from earlier in this decade or an 850 sportwagon. Us? We love the classic turbo 240 (main pic). Tracks include the Gothenburg Eco Drive Arena in Volvo’s hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden, and Chayka in Kiev, Ukraine. The developers spent more than 1,000 working on each track.
SimBin recommends playing the game with a steering wheel and foot pedals like, say, the $1,350 Ecci Trackstar 6000 that Wired tested. For the 240, we recommend a tweed jacket with elbow patches and a “Kill Your Television” sticker on the bumper.

My THIS is Better than your THAT
Here's the thing on the Linux/and or Mac folks vs the Windows folks.
Linux users are tinkerers. They can't imagine putting a piece of software on their system without having to F* with it. Windows people want to use the software for what the software does, not compile it, scour the source code, write a nasty letter to the code author(s) because they forgot to put a period at the end of sentence and etc... Mac people don't even care if it works, they just want it to look pretty. Linux users (how many different flavors of Linux is there now? 16 to the 16th power?)would rather make the software than actually use it. Why? Because to them the fun isn't actually using the software but seeing HOW it works. Windows users are less inclined to care HOW but that it just WORKS with minimal effort. Mac users don't even use their Pacs except to show them to their trendy friends so they can be "outside the box".
To the Linux people I say if you are paying for something you wouldn't expect to have to build it all first right? Your still paying for that "free" OS with your time.
Try seeing a car company stay afloat that gives you all the pieces but makes you build your car from scratch. There are a small few who would raher do that. The majority would not. These two types will never understand the other or agree. So how about we all agree to disagree? What I don't understand is why the Linux nerds and Mac heads have to come out of his/her natural habitats and poke the Windows users with their sticks? Sounds like the "My car is bigger than yours hence, I must have a bigger stick" syndrome. How often do you see Windows users running into a Linux/Mac post and slamming them? Not often because A) They are too busy actually using their programs and B) What does it gain you? Do you feel that needy that you have to somehow justify to the world why you use an OS that's better used for Servers? Both of you go into your corners, use the software you prefer and let each person have their own choice without your own twisted sense of what is better. Take any two similar competing items and you always get this. Os vs OS. Game console vs game console, religion vs religion, on and on. Just shut the F* up and be happy with what you have and be grateful you have a freaking choice. For the record I could care less what you call my OS. As long as it does what I pay for, be it time or money, then I'm happy with it.

PETA Sues On Behalf Of Geese Lost In 'Flight 1549 Tragedy'

Asks For $250K, Apologies To Flock -- "But We Can Do Without Apologies"
ANN APRIL 1st "SPECIAL" EDITION: Saying the recent downing of a US Airways Airbus A320 following an inflight encounter with geese was "an avian tragedy unprecedented in the course of modern human events," on Wednesday the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals filed suit in US District Court of New York against the airline for the "unwarranted slaughter, fricasseeing, slicing, dicing, julienning and barbequeing of at least four Canadian Geese."
As ANN reported, the A320 with 155 persons onboard had just taken off from New York's LaGuardia Airport on January 15 when its flight path conflicted with the track of a large flock of geese. Investigators have not yet determined how many birds were struck by the airliner... but PETA officials believe between 4-6 birds met their demise, most by passing through the rotating turbine disks of the airliner's twin CFM56-5B/P turbofans.
"There is no other way to say it -- the so-called "Miracle on the Hudson" was in truth a slaughter," said PETA spokeswoman Moonbeam Horowitz. "Those birds took flight that day with not a care in the world, their sole goal to fly around for a little bit in the manner Mother Nature intended.
"It's unconscionable such a tragedy has been lauded by the media, our elected officials -- even President Obama! -- as an inspiring event," Horowitz added. "What's more, we fear such popular support will only spur other pilots to attempt copycat acts."
The animal rights organization is seeking $250,000 in damages, as well as a formal apology from US Airways CEO Doug Parker, Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, and first officer Jeffrey Skiles.
Horowitz added, "if a deal must be made, we can do without the apologies."
In related news, a major cereal company announced special honorary packaging of one of its popular breakfast cereals, in honor of the Flight 1549 crew. Instead of the legendary "Wheaties" box, however, the crew will grace the fronts of economy-size boxes of "Shredded Tweet."
